The most anticipated competition arrives from July 11 to August 3. The World Aquatics Championships is the largest and most important event organized by World Aquatics with up to six different disciplines: swimming, diving, high diving, open water swimming, artistic swimming and water polo . Since the 2001 Fukuoka edition, it had been held in odd-numbered years, although after the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been held consecutively from 2022 to 2025 , this being the last edition to return to its normal periodicity for 2027.
The competition, held in Singapore, will feature swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo at the World Aquatics Championships Arena, the country’s largest sports complex. It opened on June 30, 2014, on a 35-hectare site and houses the National Stadium and Indoor Stadium. The venue was later joined by the Aquatics Centre and Arena, which will also host competitions such as diving . Sentosa Beach will host the open water and high diving events .
Athletes and teams to watch at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships
Stars and more stars. Paris 2024 Olympic gold medalists Leon Marchand, Summer McIntosh, Katie Ledecky, Thomas Ceccon, and Kaylee McKeown are all set to compete. In open water swimming, all eyes will be on Hungary’s Kristof Rasovszky , the current world and Olympic 10km champion. In the women’s division, two-time Olympic champion and reigning world 5km and 10km champion Sharon van Rouwendaal has opted out of competing this year, meaning Australia’s Moesha Johnson, who won silver in Paris and was the 2024 world team champion, could claim her first individual world title .
Water polo will continue the level playing field of recent years. Croatia, the reigning men’s world champion, will look to avenge its Olympic final loss to Serbia , while the U.S. women’s team will look to bounce back from a disappointing Olympics to defend their world title and claim their tenth title overall. Standing in their way will be Olympic champion Spain , which is looking to maintain its strong form.
The Spanish women’s national team will be looking to shake off the disappointment of the last two World Championships , where they won a silver and a bronze medal. The last World Championship won by the Spanish team was in 2013. In diving, China swept all the gold medals in the Olympic disciplines at the 2024 World Championships . In diving, the performance of the Mexican divers will also be important to watch, while in artistic swimming, Olympic champion China is the favorite to dominate the team competitions , after a fantastic season at the World Cup. Its main rival will be Spain , which, led in the water by talents such as Iris Tió and Dennis González, won a total of 8 medals in the last Superfinal of the 2025 Artistic Swimming World Cup. Countries such as Ukraine, the United States, and Japan will also be teams to keep in mind , especially in the men’s solo and mixed duet competitions.
