Federal Environment Minister Schneider politician told Deutschlandfunk that this was a smart and highly ambitious initiative. Schneider explicitly supported allowing EU member states to count climate certificates from countries outside the European Union toward achieving their targets. The idea is to use technology to ensure that countries like India and Mexico no longer use old coal-fired power plants. Instead, new, efficient renewable energy plants can be built there. With its proposal for 2040, the EU Commission primarily aims to give member states more flexibility.
