A team of experts from the US National Institutes of Health diagnosed depression or mental stress related to weather in 1984 after research. According to the head of the team, Dr. Norman Rosenthal, the abbreviation “SAD” was given to make it easier to remember, keeping in mind the sadness caused by weather changes.
Scientists are researching how the cells in our eyes convert the blue light into signals that are specific to our mood and alertness. The sun is rich in blue light. That is why when sunlight reaches our eyes during the day, our brain is more awake and active and therefore more cheerful.
How to avoid this condition?
To get rid of the dominance of sadness and despair in winter, the first thing you need to do is to get yourself moving. Regular exercise can be a great help in this regard. If you are spending more time at home these days, then do those unfinished household chores that you are unable to do due to lack of time, such as any repair work or cleaning, etc.
Wake up in the morning and open the doors and windows so that sunlight can come in. Be sure to spend some time in the sun every day. Increase social activities. If you don’t want to go out due to the cold weather, organize a small gathering at home with friends. Take special care of your diet, eat hot and healthy foods, and drink plenty of water so that you stay fit both medically and physically. If you are taking medication for depression, be sure to tell your doctor about your new symptoms and change your medication with their advice.
