Putin suggests Russia open to direct talks with Ukraine

In a surprising shift, Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested he’s open to direct peace talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky—something not seen since the early weeks of Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion.

Speaking on Russian state TV Monday, Putin said Russia “has always looked positively on any peace initiatives,” adding, “We hope the Kyiv regime feels the same.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified that Putin was specifically referring to negotiations about preventing attacks on civilian targets.

While Zelensky didn’t respond directly to Putin’s comments, he reiterated in his nightly address that Ukraine is “ready for any conversation” that could protect civilians. He also proposed a 30-day halt to missile and drone strikes on civilian infrastructure, framing it as a potential first step toward a broader ceasefire.

“We stand by our offer,” Zelensky said. “The simplest way to ensure civilian safety is to stop missile and drone attacks. A real and lasting ceasefire must be the foundation of a secure and enduring peace.”

In a rare admission, Putin acknowledged that a Russian strike earlier this month did hit a civilian facility—a congress center in Sumy—killing 35 and injuring over 100 during a public event on Palm Sunday. He defended the attack by claiming that those present were involved in anti-Russian actions in Kursk, but admitted the building was civilian.

Meanwhile, reports overnight confirmed new Russian drone attacks on Odessa, injuring three and damaging residential buildings.

Ukraine is also preparing for high-level talks in London this week with US and European leaders, following discussions in Paris. Zelensky said the priority will be to “push for an unconditional ceasefire.”

US President Donald Trump expressed hope for a breakthrough, warning he might “take a pass” on future peace talks if no progress is made this week.
