Islam Abu Taeima, a 40-year-old mother of five, says desperation has forced her to search through garbage in Gaza City for food. “We’re dying of hunger,” she explains.
Her family is among over two million Palestinians facing the threat of famine after 19 months of conflict and nearly three months under an Israeli blockade.
Although some aid has recently entered the area, much of it has not reached those in need.
Formerly employed by the United Nations, Islam now relies on boiling stale bread and scraps to feed her children. “Hunger is the most devastating illness,” she says.
