As we move into 2025, the world of crafting continues to evolve with fresh ideas and creative innovations. From sustainable materials to digital crafting tools, these nine trends highlight the exciting shifts shaping DIY projects. Stay ahead of the curve and discover what’s next in the crafting world!
1 Needle Felting

If you’re a fan of cute, handmade creations, needle felting could be the perfect craft for you in the upcoming year. To get started, you’ll only need three basic supplies: wool, a barbed needle, and a felting surface (to keep your fingers safe from accidental pokes). This technique involves shaping wool into 3D forms using the needle, and it has gained popularity on social media for creating charming woodland creatures. “At first, you might hesitate to poke a needle into wool, but once you begin, it’s hard to ignore how satisfying and calming the process can be,” says Jessie Chui, mixed media artist and owner of Crafted to Bloom.
2 Resin Art

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably noticed resin art popping up everywhere. This creative process involves mixing epoxy resin with color pigments to produce stunning patterns and textures. While resin art has been around for a while, news said that it recently gained massive popularity on TikTok, with over 18 billion views on the platform. It’s commonly used to fill molds for making jewelry, coasters, and ornaments, and can even turn ordinary wooden furniture into one-of-a-kind masterpieces.
3 Punch Needle Embroidery

While embroidery was a major trend in 2023, a more specialized technique is set to take the spotlight in 2025: punch needle. The key difference with punch needle is the type of needle used and the unique texture it creates. This method involves using a larger needle, held like a pen, that punches thread into the fabric while remaining on the surface. Punch needle has taken off on TikTok, with nearly 400 million views showcasing a variety of creations—from rugs and mirror frames to wall art and coasters—shared by passionate crafters.
4 Upholstery

With the rising popularity of upcycling, it’s no surprise that upholstery is becoming a crafting trend to watch in 2024. People across social media have been sharing videos of their transformations, taking secondhand furniture and turning it into stunning new pieces (ours included!). “I’ve been gathering upholstery books from my local thrift store because I’m noticing that more people are taking on DIY projects for their curtains, pillows, and cushions,” says Brittany Jepsen, founder and creative director of The House That Lars Built. She also anticipates that the English cottage aesthetic will influence upholstery fabric choices in the coming year.
5 Squeegee Painting

Squeegee painting is set to become a major craft trend in 2024, offering an easy way to dive into painting. “This trend requires little to no prior experience, making it fun and accessible for everyone,” says Ashley Poskin, DIY expert and freelance writer for MarthaStewart.com. “The process is incredibly calming, and the results are stunning.” To create squeegee art, simply apply dots of different-colored paint onto a canvas and use a squeegee to spread it around. It’s a playful and creative activity for adults, and simple enough for kids to enjoy as well.
6 Disco Ball Art

Disco is making a comeback—and it’s bringing its sparkle into the world of crafting. The News trend started on TikTok, where creators began making their own disco balls, and quickly grew from there. “Mirror mosaic tile stickers are both affordable and easy to work with, and crafters are using them on all sorts of projects,” says Poskin (we’ve spotted them on shoes, figurines, mirrors, planters, and more). “These projects are especially enjoyable during the long, dark winter months, as the little mirrors reflect light and brighten up your space.”
7 Homemade Clothes

DIY fashion has gained significant traction as an alternative to buying new clothes, and Jepsen predicts this trend will continue to grow in 2024. In addition to upcycling thrifted garments, she expects many DIY enthusiasts to start making their own clothes from scratch. “One of my favorite new Instagram accounts to follow is run by sewists who create their own clothing and share the process,” says Jepsen. “In a time when originality can feel challenging to achieve, they’re proving that it’s entirely possible.”
8 Macrame

Macrame, a centuries-old weaving technique, is experiencing a resurgence, largely driven by platforms like TikTok and Instagram. “This timeless art form is making a strong comeback,” says Chui. “Knots tied on 3-ply cotton twine have never looked better.”
In the coming year, you can expect to see macrame used in a variety of creative ways, from wall art and fruit baskets to coasters, plant hangers, and other functional designs. While the materials required will vary depending on the project, one essential supply for any macrame craft is macrame cord.
9 Pottery

Pottery has always been a beloved craft, but it’s currently enjoying a resurgence on TikTok, where the hashtag has racked up nearly four billion views. Many young creators on the platform have gone viral by showcasing their pottery creations, including everything from bowls and vases to plates and cups. If you’re curious about giving pottery a try, consider taking a lesson at a local studio.
